Eureka Police arrested a 19-year-old Ballwin man for suspicion of driving while intoxicated after the man allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana. The man had been stopped for allegedly speeding on Hwy. 109, police reported.
At about 11:15 p.m. Dec. 4, an officer saw a 2020 Dodge Ram exit I-44 and travel at a high rate of speed on northbound Hwy. 109. The officer tracked the pickup’s speed with a radar gun, and the man was allegedly going 60 mph in a 40-mph zone, the report said.
The officer stopped the man in the 4500 block of Hwy. 109. When he talked to the man driving the pickup, the driver allegedly avoided eye contact and his eyes were bloodshot, according to the report.
When the officer asked the man about his eyes, he allegedly told the officer that he “just smoked a bowl.” The officer interpreted the man’s statement to mean the driver recently smoked marijuana, the report said.
The man allegedly refused to perform field sobriety tests. The officer arrested the man for suspicion of DWI and took him to the Police Station, according to the report.
The man was booked and released, the report said.
Eureka Police issued the man summons to appear in Eureka Municipal Court for alleged speeding and DWI, Capt. Michael Werges said.
