Festus woman allegedly trespasses, steals from High Ridge homes

Antoni Burks

Antoni D. Burks, 29, of Festus allegedly entered three different High Ridge homes over a six-week period, making up different excuses for why she was at the homes each time.

She also allegedly stole money from two of the homes, according to court documents.

Burks has been charged with two counts of first-degree burglary, a class B felony punishable by five to 15 years in prison; and first-degree trespassing, a class B misdemeanor that carries a punishment of up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000, court records show.

She was arrested on Nov. 13, and as of today, Nov. 20, she was being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, court documents said.

Burks allegedly entered three homes between Sept. 16 and Oct. 20. The houses are on Heatherstone, Paradise Valley and Oak Bluff drives, which are all near each other in High Ridge, according to the case’s probable-cause statement.

Burks first entered a home on Sept. 16 in the 700 block of Heatherstone Drive. She allegedly told a woman at the house that she was there to provide therapy, the report said.

The woman refused to be treated by Burks, and when she called her therapist, she was told one was supposed to come to her home that day. Burks left the home, but she came back with paperwork for the woman to sign for refusing treatment, according to the report.

However, the woman said the paperwork was a “grade school worksheet” and didn’t sign it. Nothing was reported stolen from the home, the report said.

On Oct. 2, Burks entered a home in the 1500 block of Paradise Valley Road. A woman in the home said Burks appeared in the doorway of her bedroom, and Burks apologized for being in the house and told the woman that she got her “houses mixed up,” according to the report.

The woman said after Burks left, she discovered $50 was stolen from her purse. Burks allegedly told investigators she was in the home and left when the woman there confronted her, the report said.

Burks on Oct. 20 allegedly entered another home, which was in the 5000 block of Oak Bluff Drive. A man in the home said he thought it was his wife coming home after walking the dog, but instead, it was Burks, according to the report.

The man said Burks asked him if he received a newspaper at his house because she wanted it for one of his neighbors who she was providing care for. When the man said he didn’t have a newspaper, Burks asked if she could use the bathroom, the report said.

The man said he allowed her to use the bathroom, and Burks then left the house. Burks allegedly admitted to an investigator she had been in the house, according to the report.

When the man’s wife returned home, she discovered $20 was stolen from her purse, the report said.
