Pevely officials are looking for a new city administrator after Nathan Schauf abruptly resigned from the job last week.

Mayor Stephanie Haas said Schauf gave a resignation letter to City Clerk Ashton Lowery on June 30 and immediately quit.

Haas said Schauf left without explaining his decision and did not say if he had accepted a job elsewhere.

“We wish him the best of luck in whatever he is choosing to do,” she said.”

Schauf, 31, had been Pevely’s city administrator since Feb. 20, 2019. He was being paid a $76,000 annual salary.

He came to Pevely from Owensville, where he also had served as city administrator.

The Pevely Board of Aldermen held a special closed session meeting the evening of June 30 to discuss the search for a new city administrator and how to cover the city administrator duties until a replacement is hired.

“We will begin advertising immediately,” Haas said.

Longtime municipal employee Wade Amsden was once again pegged to handle the city administrator duties in the interim, she said.

“We have Wade Amsden, our sewer supervisor,” Haas said. “He’s to take over the duties on a temporary basis until we get a new city administrator. He’s been with the city 35-plus years.”

She said the Board of Aldermen is scheduled on July 12 to discuss paying Amsden a stipend above his regular salary.

“I’m sure he’ll receive additional compensation,” Haas said.

Amsden’s salary as Sewer Department supervisor is $65,520.

He previously took over the Pevely city administrator position three times, most recently for about four months beginning in October 2018 after Todd Melkus resigned from the job to become the city manager of De Soto until Schauf took over in February 2019.

Amsden, 60, said he served as “temporary” Pevely city administrator twice in the early 1990s, for a total of four years during the two stints.

Schauf did not return requests for comment by Leader deadline on Tuesday.
