NASA astronauts make space ‘cake’ to celebrate new crew members

Social media users are puzzling over a "cake" made by astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

The dubious treat was shown off on Wednesday, July 22, as they celebrated the recent arrival of a new crew.

NASA's Anil Menon arrived at the orbital outpost on July 14, along with Roscosmos cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina.

As the trio were pictured with the colorful creation, there was discussion online about its ingredients.

Facebook user Dan Smith posted, "Can't tell if that's a cake, weird space nachos, or a massive pile of fancy sushi rolls."

While Michael Miller commented, "The article alleges that it's a cake, but I was wondering, too."

Jill Smith added, "Whatever that it is, it looks disgusting."

The new arrivals are learning mission responsibilities from three crewmates — Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway and Chris Williams — who are preparing to return to Earth aboard a Soyuz spacecraft this weekend.

A previous cake made on the Space Station in July last year was described as having ingredients including "sweet bread, condensed milk and walnuts."
