Hillsboro residents who are planning to vote in the election Tuesday (April 2) might want to sharpen their pencils.
Two write-in candidates have registered to run for seats in Hillsboro.
For mayor, businessman Buddy Russell has filed as a write-in candidate against former Mayor Dennis K. Bradley and Marcy D. Wokurka.
On the Board of Alderspersons, incumbent Brenda L. King faces a write-in challenge from Rick Abel for a two-year term representing Ward 1.
Under state election law, in contested races, write-in candidates must file with the County Clerk’s Office before the election for any votes to be counted.
For seats in which no one has filed – or when there are multiple positions open but not enough candidates to fill them all – all write-in votes are tabulated.
In Tuesday’s election, three political entities are in that situation.
In Scotsdale, Melinda Holahan is the only candidate for two available two-year seats on the Board of Trustees, so all write-in votes will be counted.
The same holds true in Parkdale, where no one filed for seats representing Ward 1 and Ward 2 on the Board of Trustees. Kenneth A. Beck is running unopposed for the Ward 3 seat. The term of each seat is for two years.
In the Valle Lake Sewer District, no one filed for the single five-year term, so all write-in votes will count in that election.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
