Batting cages, pitching cages and sportswear and equipment sales may be coming to Pevely.
A public hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Pevely City Hall, 401 Main St., on a request for a special-use permit to allow the development of an “athletic arena” at 8774 Commercial Blvd. (Hwy. 61-67), Pevely building commissioner Ken Graves said. The business is proposed on a portion of the property where the Pevely flea market formerly operated.
The owner of the property, Stephen Voyles of Fenton, is seeking the permit to allow All-Star Batting Cages to move from Herculaneum to Pevely.
Mike Cook, owner of the business, has applied for a Pevely business license.
The former flea market site is zoned B2 and can be used for general business purposes. A sports complex is not allowable under the zoning, but is listed under special uses, Graves said.
All-Star Batting Cages does not sell merchandise at its current site but plans to expand and sell items in Pevely, said Terry Thomas, Pevely city administrator.
The Pevely Planning and Zoning Commission will make a recommendation on the permit to the Board of Aldermen, which will make the final decision.
The business plans to lease one of two buildings on the 17-acre tract, plus some area around the building. City officials said in April that another business is eyeing the second building on the site, although no details were available.
The Pevely flea market closed in 2011. Before becoming a flea market, the property was used for a drive-in movie business.
