A St. Louis woman was killed in a traffic accident Friday night (Nov. 25) on I-55 near Pevely.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that Audra Evans, 37, of St. Louis was driving a 2008 Honda Fit north on I-55 north of Hwy. Z at 8:45 p.m. when she braked suddenly to avoid hitting the rear of an unknown vehicle. The Honda traveled off the left side of the road and struck the center median cables, then began to turn over. The Honda returned to the road and came to rest on its passenger side, sideways in the left lane.
A 2010 Dodge Charger driven by Brittney Kopf, 23, of O’Fallon was trailing the accident and braked and attempted to swerve to avoid the Honda in the roadway. The left front of her car struck the roof of the Honda.
Evans was taken by Survival Flight helicopter to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, where she was pronounced dead at 9:51 p.m., according to the report.
Kopf sustained minor injuries and was taken by car to Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. An update on her condition was not available.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, the report said. The Honda was totaled and the Dodge had extensive damage.
