fatal traffic accident

Jerome Isaac Jr., 25, of Festus died Sunday afternoon, Nov. 20, from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident on Hwy. 110 near Upper Plattin Spur east of De Soto, authorities reported.

The accident happened at about 2:10 p.m., said John Scullin, spokesman for De Soto Rural Fire Protection, which was called in to extricate the victim from the vehicle.

Isaac was driving a 2015 Chrysler 200 east on the highway where he was traveling “at a high rate of speed,” Sheriff’s Office spokesman Grant Bissell said in an email.

“For an unknown reason, the driver engaged his brake, skidding across into the westbound lane and onto the shoulder.” Then, the vehicle continued clockwise into the embankment before striking a tree, causing the tree to fall on top of the vehicle, Bissell went on to say in the email.

Scullin said the tree made it difficult to extricate the man from the vehicle.

“It took about an hour to get him out of the car,” he said. “After we got him out, he was in cardiac arrest.”

He said the man was transported by Valle Ambulance to Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City, where he was pronounced dead.

The vehicle was totaled, authorities reported.
