traffic accident patrol patch

A Festus woman was injured Wednesday morning, Oct. 23, when the pickup she was riding in was struck by a car driven by someone who allegedly was racing another vehicle on I-55 north of Hwy. 50 in St. Louis County, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.

At 7:50 a.m., an unknown person was driving a 2018 Infiniti Q50 north on the interstate and reportedly was speeding and weaving through traffic while racing the other vehicle and struck a northbound 2016 Ram 1500 driven by James I. Rains, 68, of Festus, and the pickup overturned. The Infiniti struck a guard rail, and then the occupants of the car fled the scene, the report said.

No injuries were reported for James Rains, but a passenger in the pickup – Denice M. Raines, 68, of Festus – was seriously injured and taken by the Mehlville Fire Protection District to Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis County, where she was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.

Both the Rainses were wearing seat belts, the patrol reported.

The two vehicles were totaled, the report said.
