A Barnhart man was killed late Saturday evening (July 25) in a two-vehicle traffic accident on I-55 in which the other driver, who was driving south in the northbound lanes of the interstate, was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that Shane Bird, 41, of Barnhart was driving a 2006 Toyota Camry Solara north on I-55 just south of the Pevely exit at 11:34 p.m. when a 2016 Jeep Renegade that was headed the wrong way in the same lane as Bird was driving struck the front of the Toyota.
Bird was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:58 p.m. by paramedics with the Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District.
The driver of the Jeep, a 27-year-old man from Parkville in Platte County, was taken by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in south St. Louis County, where he was arrested by patrol officers on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter.
The man will not be named unless he is charged by the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Bird was not wearing a seat belt, the report said, but the driver of the Jeep was. Both vehicles were totaled.
