Those who intend to run for public office in the April 2 general election may begin filing on Tuesday, Dec. 5, and the filing period ends Tuesday, Dec. 26.

Candidates on the April ballot will run for seats on boards or councils that govern cities, school districts and fire, ambulance, water, sewer and road districts.

In countywide races, Jefferson County 911 Dispatch has three board seats up for election, and the Jefferson County Health Department has two seats open. Jefferson College will have no seats up for election in April.

Not all fire districts have open seats each year, and in 2024, there will be no elections for the De Soto Rural, Eureka, Hematite, High Ridge, Hillsboro, Mapaville and Pacific fire protection districts.

The last day for governmental entities to place tax increase requests and other measures on the ballot is Jan. 23. The last day to register to vote in the election is March 6.

Typically, candidates file for open seats during regular business hours at the offices that serve the various governmental entities, although some candidates are asked to file at the Jefferson County Administration Center in Hillsboro.

Those who are interested in filing are advised to check for possible holiday closures, especially at school districts, which close for winter breaks. School districts will be required to be open for at least part of the day on Dec. 26, the last day of filings.

The following is a list of local office holders whose terms expire in April. Incumbents – those who were elected to the seats they hold – are denoted with an (I). Those who were appointed to fill vacancies on boards are noted, as well as the names of those they replaced, when the information was available.
