Regina Hasty said her granddaughter’s pet tortoise, Thomas, enjoys his time in her yard in De Soto.
Thomas, considered a juvenile at under 2 years of age, is a western Hermann’s tortoise who belongs to 11-year-old Pamela Meyers.
“The picture is from our front yard,” Hasty said. “Now that it’s warm again, I can carry him outside. He needs it to be 70 degrees or higher.
“The picture was taken a few weeks ago when there was warmer weather.”
Hasty said her granddaughter has a special bond with Thomas.
“Tortoises make really good pets,” she said. “They’re very friendly. They like people. When (Pamela) calls him, he comes to her.”
Thomas dines on a small list of foods, she said.
“He eats dandelions, weeds, carrots and cucumbers,” Hasty said. “He loves eating apples.”
Thomas gets along with the family’s dogs.
“We have two other pets, dogs,” Hasty said. “The dogs love him.”
