Eureka Police arrested a 20-year-old Defiance woman for suspicion of driving while intoxicated after being called to I-44 near the Hwy. 109 exit due to her car being stopped on the interstate. Two men told police they blocked the woman’s car in a lane due to seeing her driving erratically, police reported.

The police were called at about 4:30 p.m. Sept. 12 because a 2024 Chevrolet Malibu was stopped in an eastbound lane of I-44. One man said he had been following the woman since seeing her driving erratically near Union and claimed the woman was driving at speeds of up to 100 mph, and the other man said he had followed the woman since Sullivan and that she nearly hit other vehicles on the interstate, the report said.

When an officer arrived, the woman was trying to maneuver the Malibu from between the pickups, and she was allegedly drinking from a Twisted Tea alcoholic-beverage while driving the car. The woman told the officer she was upset because the men who were driving the pickups were lying, according to the report.

When other officers arrived, they looked for the woman’s keys in the Malibu. The officers saw multiple alcoholic beverages in the car, the report said.

An officer then searched the car, and she found two empty vodka bottles, a 24-pack of Twisted Tea, marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia, according to the report.

The woman was arrested, and due to her condition and because her car was stopped on the interstate, officers did not ask her to perform field sobriety tests at the scene. Instead, they transported her to the Police Station, where she failed field tests, the report said.

The woman allegedly told officers she had been drinking alcohol since 2:30 p.m. that day. She registered a .333 percent blood-alcohol content, according to the report. In Missouri, .08 percent is the legal limit.

The woman was booked and released to a sober driver, the report said.

Eureka Police issued the woman a summons to appear in Eureka Municipal Court of alleged DWI, Lt. Brett Grittini said.
