Festus Police chased down and arrested three teenagers suspected of breaking into vehicles early on Monday, Feb. 17. It also looked like the teens tried to steal at least one of the vehicles, Chief Doug Wendel said.
“We got a call about 2:15 a.m. of vehicle break-ins in the area between North Fifth Street and North Ninth Street,” he said. “We ended up arresting three suspects, two adults and one juvenile. It looks like they were looking for unlocked vehicles and were taking stuff out of the vehicles.
“In one instance, it looks like they tampered with a vehicle trying to start it.”
Wendel said two of the males suspects were 18 and one was 17, a juvenile. One of the 18-year-olds and the 17-year-old were from Festus, and the other 18-year-old was from the Festus area.
He said the suspects fled when officers arrived and the officers chased them down on foot. The suspects allegedly were found with stolen items, but the report was not completed on Tuesday, and he did not have a list of all the stolen items.
The suspects were booked and released pending application for charges, Wendel said.
“It’s still an open investigation,” he said. “We know of four victims. We’re looking into further arrests and seeking other victims.”
