Hanley E. “Gene” Cherry

Cindy Cherry of Crystal City submitted a photo of her father-in-law, the late Hanley E. “Gene” Cherry, who lived in Festus for many years before his death in 1981. “He served in the Army during the Korean War as a medic, stationed locally in San Antonio, Texas, and later in Paris, France,” she said. “He worked at the US Steel Agri Chemical Plant down by Selma Village, which was later known as LaRoche Industries. He was also president of the Chamber of Commerce in the late 1960s and helped start the Jefferson County Rodeo.”
