Luke Joggerst, Fox football

With teammates Gavin McGinness, left, and Cole Elwood leaping for joy in the background, Fox's Luke Joggest celebrates Elwood's interception late in the win against Rockwood Summit.

With three weeks to go before district tournaments begin, let’s take a look at this week’s county prep football matchups.

Crystal City hasn’t tasted victory since Oct. 14, 2016. The Hornets are 0-6 this year and have been shut out four times. Crystal visits Herculaneum (2-4) in an I-55 Conference game on Friday. The Blackcats notched a conference win last week with a 26-20 victory at Grandview.

De Soto head coach Chris Johnson would love nothing more than to beat visiting Hillsboro on Friday in a Mississippi Area Football Conference Red Division game. Johnson has said this season that until the Dragons can break their long losing streaks against the Hawks and Festus, they can’t be considered true rivals.

Not only has Hillsboro beaten De Soto in the last two regular season tilts, the Hawks have ended the Dragons’ season twice in the last two Class 4 District 1 playoffs.

De Soto is coming off of its most impressive offensive performance last week after beating Fredericktown 51-41. Running back Cole Watson gashed the Blackcats for 210 yards and quarterback Briar Fischer completed 13 passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns.

Hillsboro’s three-game winning streak was erased after being thumped 34-12 by North County last week. Head coach Lee Freeman has been swapping QBs Ethan Eckrich and Tyler Sizemore during games, but the Hawks are always a run-first team and have a deep backfield, led by the 502 yards by Dylan Dace.

Fox is the lone undefeated football team in Jefferson County, but the Warriors will have a tough test at Hazelwood East on Saturday when temperatures could reach the upper 80s. County teams historically melt in North County on hot Saturdays.

If the Warriors beat the Spartans, Seckman and Northwest stand in their way of perfection through nine games.

St. Pius X is 5-1 with three I-55 games remaining. Right now, the Lancers are in third place in the conference at 2-1, behind Jefferson (3-1) and Valle Catholic (3-0). But if St. Pius wins out, it will capture its first I-55 title.
