The Leader was at several boys and girls basketball and wrestling tournaments over the weekend and will have you covered from the Bruce Thomas Boys Tournament at Herculaneum, the Hillsboro girls tournament, and wrestling tournaments at De Soto, Seckman and Francis Howell.
Highlights from the weekend include De Soto junior Landon Porter improving to 27-0 after beating Hillsboro senior Joe Becker in an overtime decision on Saturday at the 41st Bob Georger Classic. The Dragons won the team title for the second time in three years.
At the 22nd annual Kyle Thrasher Tournament at Francis Howell in St. Charles County, the Northwest girls finished first and have tournament wins this year at Rockwood Summit, McCluer and the first Wonder Woman.
The Seckman boys wrestling team won two dual meets last week -- against Fox and Lindbergh -- and wrapped up the Suburban Conference Yellow pool title.
In basketball, the St. Pius X boys met St. Louis College Prep for the second time this season. The rematch was held at Herculaneum in the tournament championship, and for the second time, the Tigers came back to beat the Lancers by a slim margin.
In the third-place girls basketball game at Hillsboro, juniors Makayla Parton and Abby Townsend combined to score 46 of Seckman’s points in a 62-53 victory over Alton, Ill. Parton has surpassed 21 or more points six times this season.
