Schuessler added that while the school board has not taken any action on Moreno, it might address his employment status at its meeting on Feb. 27.
Hillsboro Superintendent Jon Isaacson would not comment on why Moreno was on paid leave, saying the school district does not comment on personnel matters.
A 1996 graduate of Hillsboro, Moreno was the head coach of the Hillsboro baseball team for six years and an assistant football coach for three years. He has been the activities director for 11 years and is the longest-serving AD in Jefferson County.
Moreno, who also serves the R-3 district as an assistant principal for student activities in grades 7-12, was recognized in November as the Southeast Region athletic director of the year by the Missouri Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. He’s also president of the Jefferson County Activities Association.
Moreno did not respond to the Leader’s requests for an interview.
Hillsboro hosted the District 1 girls wrestling tournament on Friday and Saturday. In Moreno’s absence, Hawks head coach Matt Mitchell handed out district plaques to the first- and second-place teams, Northwest and Lafayette.
