Sammy Linderer, a sophomore midfielder for St. Pius X, has 28 points this season on five goals and 18 assists.

St. Pius X scored five unanswered goals, including two by leading scorer Brooke Merseal, to defeat Notre Dame of St. Louis 5-1 Tuesday (May 26) in the sectional round of the girls soccer Class 2 state playoffs. Merseal also had an assist, giving her 84 points this spring on 31 goals and 22 assists.

The Lancers’ other goals came from Kelly Dierkes, Lauren Marks and Abby Ottoline, while Sammy Linderer contributed two assists and Dierkes and Carly Joachimstaler had one assist each. It was the 23rd consecutive win for St. Pius (24-1), which hosts Bishop DuBourg (18-6-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the quarterfinal round. The winner moves on to the Class 2 final four in Blue Springs June 5-6.

Hillsboro, after winning the second district title in the history of its girls soccer program, lost 3-0 to host Sikeston in Tuesday’s Class 3 sectional round as the Bulldogs’ leading scorer, Torrie Helms, tallied two goals to lead her squad to its eighth straight win. Hillsboro closed its season at 14-14.
