Gaven Pinkley

Hillsboro senior Gaven Pinkley dunks the ball during practice before the season began. Pinkley scored 25 points in the Hawks' 64-41 win against Festus on Friday night.

Herculaneum led Grandview by 11 points at halftime but was held scoreless in the final 6:05 of the game.

Senior Katelyn McGlaughlin made a basket for the Eagles in the final seconds but the Blackcats held on for a 39-36 victory to capture the 20th annual Doe Run Black and Red Classic on Friday night. Both teams were unbeaten going into the game and the Blackcats are now 6-0 while the Eagles fell to 4-1.

For the second straight season, a Grandview player was named the most valuable player of the tournament. New Eagle assistant coach Kirstin Sparks was the MVP last season and senior forward/center Macy Ketcherside won the honor this year.

Members of the all-tournament team included Grandview senior Meaghan Faust, Ketcherside, Herculaneum seniors Rae Ann Fuller and Lauren Partney and sophomore Taylor Metcalf, Northwest Academy of Law senior India Hollis, St. Louis Patriettes sophomores Makayla Williams and Grace Turilli and Crystal City senior Maebry Jones.

Hawks cruise to win over Tigers

Festus tried to slow the pace of the game against high-powered Hillsboro in Friday night’s semifinals of the 62nd annual Gene Steighorst Tournament by using a half-court offense and making several passes before taking a shot.

When the Hawks had the ball, they didn’t waste any time traversing the floor with a cast of stars who can score from anywhere. The result was a 64-41 win for Hillsboro and a spot in the championship game on Saturday night.

Senior forward Gaven Pinkley (6-8) had his whole arsenal on display as he scored on a finger roll slicing through the paint, sank a couple of mid-range jump shots and had three slam dunks to lead all scorers with 25 points. Junior forward Michael Brewer (6-4) has settled right back into being Pinkley’s sidekick using a variety of offensive moves to contribute 14 points.

Senior Daniel Portell led Festus (3-2) with 13 points.

The Hawks improved to 4-0 and have won each of their last three games by 20 or more points.

Hornets pick up first win

In the seventh-place game of the 20th annual Doe Run Black and Red Girls Classic at Herculaneum, Crystal City (1-4) used a 16-0 run in the first quarter to overwhelm Maplewood-Richmond Heights 54-15 on Friday.

The Hornets held the Blue Devils (0-5) scoreless in the fourth quarter with the clock running because of the mercy rule and were led in scoring by senior Maebry Jones’ 18 points. Sophomore guard Kailey Krieg scored eight straight points in the second quarter for Crystal and finished with 13 points.

Crystal has three freshmen and three sophomores on the varsity. Freshman Annie Waites finished with 12 points.

In a battle of unbeaten teams, Grandview (4-0) plays Herculaneum in the championship game of the Doe Run Classic tonight. Check back later to see the result of this game and read the Leader next week for complete coverage of both tournaments.
