After winning the District 13 championship, and finishing second in the Zone 4 and state tournaments, the Festus Post 253 American Legion baseball team captured the Mid-South Regional Tournament title in Hastings, Neb. on Sunday.
Festus (36-12) beat Bryant, Ark. Black Sox Post 298 8-3 in the championship to advance to the World Series in Shelby, N.C. this week. Post 253 is making its first trip to the World Series in a decade and is one of eight teams vying for the crown.
Festus plays the Western Region champion at Keeter Stadium on Thursday at 1 p.m. The game is being televised on ESPN3. On Friday, Post 253 meets the Southeast Region winner at 7 p.m. That game can be seen on ESPNU. The championship is Aug. 20 at 6:30 p.m. and is on ESPNU.
Festus was 4-1 in the regional tournament and like it has all summer, got excellent pitching from Brendon Smock, Jordan Duncan, Jeremy Isenman and Jake Leitner. Isenman won two games during the tournament, and Duncan was named the most valuable player.
The players and coaches from 253 will get an all-expenses paid trip to North Carolina to compete in the World Series. After landing in Charlotte on Tuesday morning, the team will head west about an hour and stay in Shelby. Keeter Stadium holds 5,500 and has held the legion World Series since 2011.
