Festus is the only girls volleyball team in Jefferson County to advance to the sectional round of the playoffs.
After beating Park Hills Central 25-17, 25-14 on Tuesday in the Class 3 District 2 championship, the Tigers (28-2-1) are in Ste. Genevieve (19-9-4) on Saturday to play the Dragons. The winner of that Class 3 sectional match will play the winners between Lutheran South (21-9-5) and Rosati-Kain (8-9) in the state quarterfinals on Saturday.
Under current head coach Karen Biehle, Festus was last in the final four in 1997 when the Tigers came in third in Class 3. Biehle has led Festus to three final four appearances.
Jefferson beat St. Pius X 25-20, 25-23 in the Class 2 District 3 semifinals on Wednesday, ending the Lancers’ two-year streak as the Class 2 state champions. The Blue Jays (No. 2 seed) fell to top-seeded Arcadia Valley 25-18, 25-11 in the district final.
Northwest (No. 2) lost 25-15 to Eureka (No. 1) in the first set of the Class 4 District 8 championship in Washington on Wednesday. The Lions (26-5-2) and Wildcats played a marathon second set with Eureka winning 31-29 to capture its first district crown in 22 years.
