Senior Mayson DeRousse kicked a 35-yard field goal in the second overtime on Friday night to lift host De Soto to a 13-10 win against Potosi.
DeRousse, who injured his groin attempting the game-winning kick against the Trojans in a 33-31 loss last season, had missed a go-ahead field goal attempt with 2:45 remaining in a 3-3 game.
“I think the nerves got to me because of last year,” DeRousse said of the missed field goal. “I’m not as comfortable on the left hash. I tried to relax, keep my head down and let my leg do the work.”
He made a 29-yard field goal to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead with 8:13 left in the first half.
But Potosi kicker Zach Haynes tied the game with a 33-yard effort after the Trojans took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched 15 plays in 7:24.
Neither team reached the end zone until the first overtime. De Soto (4-5) got the ball first and junior wide receiver Clayton Snudden caught two passes, including a 10-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Briar Fischer that gave the Dragons a 10-3 lead.
It took Potosi (3-6) just two plays to tie the game when fullback Ryan Osia carried a pack of De Soto defenders into the end zone with an 11-yard rushing TD to tie the game 10-10.
The Trojans had the ball first in the second overtime, but on fourth-and-9, quarterback Andrew Coleman fumbled the snap and was pounced on immediately. The Dragons ran the ball on three straight plays and Fischer ran between the hash marks to set DeRousse with a shot down the middle of the field.
