Biography

A former Kansas City prosecutor and member of the Missouri House of Representatives, McCaskill first won statewide election in 1998 as state auditor. After unseating Democratic Gov. Bob Holden in a primary, she lost the 2004 gubernatorial race to Republican Matt Blunt. Two years later, she defeated incumbent Republican Sen. Jim Talent. McCaskill, whose previous statewide margins of victory and defeat had been within a few points, easily won reelection in 2012 after her opponent, Rep. Todd Akin, claimed pregnancies from “legitimate rape” were rare.

Her biggest political donors are women’s issues groups, including EMILY’s List, a political action committee that aims to elect women who support abortion rights. She has also drawn significant contributions from attorneys, retirees, and the finance and real estate sectors.
