William Ray Steele, 92, of Valles Mines, died Aug. 3, 2017, at his home. Mr. Steele served in the Marine Corps in the Asiatic-Pacific theater during World War II and was a retired service supervisor for the Canteen Corp. in Maryland Heights. Born Feb. 22, 1925, in Kansas City, he was the son of the late Florence Helen Gertrude (Dorton) and Clyde Franklin Steele. He was preceded in death by his wife: Estelle (Daniel) Steele.
He is survived by three sons: William R. (Judy) Steele of St. Louis County, John F. (Jennifer) Steele of Valles Mines and Daniel (Catherine) Steele of Crestwood; a daughter: Linda C. (Rick) Hoffman of St. Louis County; a brother: Guy (Lo) Steele of Boston; nine grandchildren: Brian Storch, Danielle C. (Ryan) Wilding, Timothy (Anna) Steele, Kacie (Adam) Elder, Zachary Steele, Kristan Hoffman, Alex Hoffman, Austin (fiance Sophie Evensen) Hoffman and Chelsea (Skyler) Smith; and eight great-grandchildren: Sullivan Steele, Noah Wilding, Alivia Elder, Kinslie Elder, Charley Evensen-Hoffman, Ben Evensen-Hoffman, Clifton Storch and Savanna Smith.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Clyde Franklin Steele Jr. and Milton Lynn Steele; and a sister: Betty Lou Baillie.
Funeral services were held Aug. 6 at Vinyard Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Dale Stringer. Inurnment with full military honors will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to any no-kill animal rescue organization. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home, Festus.
