Verlon F. Hurst, 96, of Festus died May 17, 2018, at Fountainbleau Nursing Center in Festus. Mr. Hurst was a Navy Veteran of WWII and a retired glassworker at the Pittsburg Plate Glass Co. in Crystal City. He also was a life-long member of Sacred Heart Church in Crystal City and member of its ushers club, as well as a member of VFW 3777 in Crystal City and Knights of Columbus 1230. Born July 23, 1921, in Festus, he was the son of the late Lucinda (Leon) and Frank Charles Hurst.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Bernice June (Basler) Hurst.
He is survived by two sons: Roger (Debi) Hurst of Festus and Michael Hurst of Festus; one daughter: Cindy (Mark) Hammon of Festus; three grandchildren: Eric (Brandy) Hurst, Ryan (Nichole) Hurst and Lindsay (Travis) Downey; four great-grandchildren: Ashleigh Hurst, Rian-Skai Hurst, Xander Hurst and Colton Hurst; and a great-great-grandson: Mayson Barnett.
He also was preceded in death by one brother: Arthur (the late Melva) Hurst; and one sister: Aurelia “Sis” (the late Horace Kenneth) Robbason.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, May 21, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Sacred Heart Church, 555 Bailey Road, in Crystal City, officiated by Father Clark Maes. Burial with full military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Crystal City. Memorials may be made to Mercy Jefferson Hospice or in the form of Masses. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
