The Rev. Joseph Henry Stenger, C.Ss.R., 88, of the Redemptorist Priests, died Sept. 2, 2020, at St. Clement Health Care Center in Liguori. The Rev. Stenger was born Sept. 16, 1931, in Glennonville, the son of the late Elsa Veronica (Meyer) and Joseph Casper Stenger, and was ordained as a Redemptorist priest July 2, 1957. He spent most of his religious life from 1959 through 2004 as a missionary in Brazil, where he was known as Father Pascoal Stenger.
He is survived by three sisters: Patricia Stenger of Overland, Kan., Clementine (Tony) Lampe of Black and Clara (Eugene) Herzog of De Soto; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by nine sisters: Agnes (the late Joe) Fluech, Sister Anne Mariam Stenger FSM, Margaret Stenger, Sister Mary Stenger FSM, Gertrude (the late Oscar) Schrader, Sister Jovida Marie Stenger FSM, Sister Mariella Stenger FSM, Rose (the late Deacon Tom) Murphy and Arlene Stenger; and three brothers: Ferdinand (Frances survives of Columbia) Stenger, Wilford (Bernice survives of Perryville) Stenger and Edward (Karen survives of Jonesburg) Stenger.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. until a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Imperial, officiated by Father Michael Murphy, pastor of St. Ferdinand Church in Florissant and The Rev Stenger’s nephew. Burial is in the Redemptorists Cemetery at Liguori. Memorials may be made to the St. Clement Health Care Center, 300 Liguori Drive, Liguori, 63052. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus.
