Steven Mark “Stevie” McDowell, 58, of Hillsboro died Nov. 1, 2018. Mr. McDowell established the Books on the Run program, which delivers books, movies and music to the homebound and people with physical limitations. He was a volunteer for multiple organizations, including delivering more than 1,200 meals over 24 years for Meals on Wheels. He graduated from Mapaville State School in 1982. He participated in the Special Olympics bowling and track and field events, and was awarded several gold and silver medals. He enjoyed fishing, camping, roller skating, wrestling, the Dallas Cowboys and their cheerleaders, music, pets and children. He was known as a people person with great attention to detail who made people laugh and made their lives more meaningful. He retired from NextStep for Life in 2017. Born Oct. 29, 1960, in Crystal City, he was the son of the late Mary Lou (Gibbar) and Robert E. McDowell.

He is survived by three sisters: Cathy Larson of Dittmer, Linda Clinton of Fenton and Brenda (Dennis) Cordia of St. Louis; three brothers: Warren (Dena) McDowell of Bonne Terre, Wayne (Tammy) McDowell of Hillsboro and Dennis McDowell of Wentzville; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, at Robert D. Brown Funeral Home, 103 Fourth St., in Hillsboro, and from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at St. Rose of Lima Mission Catholic Church of Silver Lake, 10138 Hwy. T, Perryville, followed immediately by funeral services. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Elizabeth Adult Day Care Center, 308 Plaza Way, Arnold 63010. Arrangements are under the direction of Robert D. Brown Funeral Home.
