Hammer, Stephen

Stephen Frank Hammer, 68, of Festus died Feb. 8, 2019, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mr. Hammer was a rural mail carrier out of the Arnold Post Office. He was an Eagle Scout and a graduate of Festus High School and Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Jefferson R-7 Fire Protection District, a member of the NRA, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member and past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge 1721. He enjoyed reading, hunting, playing cards, going to auctions, spending time at his beloved Elks Lodge and was always seeking to help others. He was born May 23, 1950, in St Louis, the son of the late Virgil Frank and Katherine Elizabeth (Shrum) Hammer.

He is survived by two sisters: Judith (Terry) Turner of Carrollton, Texas, and Jayne (Manjit) Misra of Ames, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and dear friends.

Visitation is at 9 a.m. and a funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Mahn Twin City Chapel, 515 Collins Dr., in Festus, officiated by Deacon Jerry Stoverink. Burial is in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Crystal City. Memorials may be made to the Festus-Crystal City Elks Lodge Scholarship Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of Mahn Twin City Chapel.
