Roland Aloysius “Ray” Wegmann, 89, of Barnhart, formerly of Festus, died Jan. 14, 2017. Born June 6, 1927, in north St. Louis, he was the son of the late John H. and Freda (Knecht) Wegmann. After completing his military service in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1945, he attended and graduated from St. Louis University Law School in 1953 and moved to Jefferson County in 1965 to work at the law firm that still bears his name. During his 60-plus years of legal practice, Mr. Wegmann represented thousands of clients with estates, trusts and all types of legal matters, arguing cases in state and federal courts. He was an appellate practitioner, having argued cases before the Missouri Supreme Court and the Intermediate Appellate Courts. He was an active member of Our Lady Church and one of the founders of the Lancer Endowment at St. Pius X High School. He loved sports, whether it was watching the St. Louis Cardinals at Sportsman’s Park as a child, cheering on Mizzou, or making his yearly pilgrimage to South Bend to see Notre Dame. He was always the life of the party and loved his family, his faith and the law.
He is survived by his wife: Fredericka (Isenman) Wegmann; five children: Fred (Jane) Trace, Renee (Steve) Lewis, Jim (Maryann) Trace, John Trace and Christopher (Erin) Wegmann; a brother: Clarence (Mildred) Wegmann; a brother-in-law: John Isenman; two grandchildren: Elizabeth (Jeff) Thier and Lauren Trace; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother: Jerome (the late Jean) Wegmann.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main, in Festus. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Our Lady Catholic Church, 1550 St. Mary’s Lane, in Festus, officiated by Father Edward Nemeth. Burial is in the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to the Lancer Endowment Fund (L.E.A.P) at St. Pius X High School, P.O. Box 760, Festus, 63028. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
