Skaggs, Poogie

Robert H. “Poogie” Skaggs, 83, of Festus died Jan. 24, 2020, at his home. Mr. Skaggs was the retired owner/operator of Poogie’s Antonia Market in Antonia and also had worked for the Missouri State Highway Department. He was a member of Our Lady Church in Festus, where he was very active with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and was a fourth-degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 14420. He mentored many young people in the community during his 11 years as a basketball and volleyball coach at Our Lady School as well as his 21 years as a baseball coach with the Twin City Little League. He also served on the Crystal City Council. Born Nov. 11, 1936, in Crystal City, he was the son of the late Matilda Mary (Schuh) and Earl Henry Skaggs.

He is survived by his wife: Mary (Lyons) Skaggs; two daughters: Stephanie (Dan) Brueggeman of Bethalto, Ill., and Susie Skaggs of Festus; three grandchildren: Maddie Brueggeman, Mary Grace Brueggeman and Joshua Skaggs; two brothers: Frederick Gale (Diane) Skaggs of Festus and Monte J. (Anna) Skaggs of Eureka; and two sisters-in-law: Cindy Skaggs of Bowling Green, Ky., and Judy Skaggs of Fernandina Beach, Fla.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: David L. Skaggs, and Bruce M. Skaggs.

Visitation is scheduled from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Our Lady Church in Festus, officiated by Father Gregory Klump. Memorials may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Our Lady Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
