Chapman, Stephen

Stephen Nelson “Steve” Chapman, 74, of Boerne, Texas, died Nov. 11, 2024, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Mr. Chapman spent his childhood in Festus. There, at the age of 13, he met the woman he would marry, Sharon. He was a 1968 graduate of St. Pius X High School where he was a four-year football letterman and student council president. He attended the University of Missouri-St. Louis and worked many full-time jobs to pay for his schooling. He earned his degree in business administration in 1972. He began his career in public accounting as a CPA at Boyd, Franz & Stephans (where he would meet his best friend, Rick Blalock), later at Ernst & Whinney and then as a finance and accounting executive for various global firms based in San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Kansas City. His career required frequent travel to Europe, Asia and the Middle East. This also allowed him to tour some of his “bucket list” travel destinations like Jerusalem, Amman and Beijing. Retiring from full-time work in 2016, he worked seasonally as a tax consultant at a local firm in Boerne. While committed to his career, he still made time for his family. He enjoyed traveling and would often take family trips to Breckenridge, Banff, Lake Hamilton and Gulf Shores. He and Sharon took trips around the world, including a 25th-anniversary trip to Paris. He loved sports and served as a coach for many of his sons’ teams. He was a supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals and the University of Texas Longhorns and made three trips to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. His passion was boating and relaxing on the water. He taught his sons, friends and extended family how to waterski while spending almost every Saturday during the summer months pulling skiers on the north end of Lake Travis. Most of all, he loved watching his sons graduate and support their own families. He will be remembered for his optimism, pride in his family, love for others and trust in God. Born Sept. 14, 1950, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Jack and LaWanda Chapman.

He is survived by his wife: Sharon Lynn (Roth) Chapman, whom he married on Jan. 14, 1972, in Festus; three sons: Matthew Ryan (Brandy), Aaron Neil (Heather) and Andrew Stephen (Cassie Alford); four grandchildren: Benjamin, Ella, Jack and Grant; a grand dog: Auri, who often took car rides with “Papa” to McDonald’s; siblings-in-law: Rob (Mary) Roth, Michael “Jimmy” (Mary) Roth, Linda (Jim Pingle) Wilhelm and John (late Brenda) Felgate; five nieces; six nephews; and numerous friends and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Brenda; a brother: Tracy; a niece: Angela Felgate; and his parents-in-law: Oscar and Mary Lou Roth.

A celebration of life was held Nov. 19 at Ebensberger Fisher Funeral Home in Boerne, Texas. A funeral Mass was held Nov. 20 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Boerne.
