Roberta “Bert” Childers, 79, of Wappapello died Jan. 5, 2025, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Childers was a former baker at Wonder Bread and a member of the Confectioners Union in St. Louis. She was also affiliated with the Little Brushy General Baptist Church. Born Aug. 31, 1945, in St. Louis, she was the daughter of the late Loren Thomas Mitchell and Audrey (Talbert) Mitchell.
She was preceded in death by her husband: John W. Childers Sr., whom she married on April 25, 1964, in St. Louis.
She is survived by a son: John (Rita) Childers Jr. of Festus; a daughter: Cathy (Allen) Mowery of Imperial; seven grandchildren: Mandy (Jessie Hewitt) Mowery, David (Taylor) Mowery, John Mowery, Nichole (Brandon) Huffman, Drake Childers, Miranda (Austin Meyer) Childers and Ryan (Jenna)Hansen; 10 great-grandchildren: Jack, Evan, Ellie, Nolan, Jace, Daxton, Emmy, Amaris, Brooklyn and Colton; a brother: Charles Mitchell; two sisters: Estelle Barks and Marilyn Nolen; and many other family members and friends.
She also was preceded in death by five brothers: Eugene, Donald, Carl, Gary and Clifford; and five sisters: Barbara Webber, Wilda Crawford, Violet Wade, Debbie Conrad and Rita Linn.
Visitation is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. until a funeral service at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Little Brushy Baptist Church, 8346 Hwy. T, in Wappapello, 63966, officiated by the Rev. Tim Schultz. Burial will follow in Little Brushy Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or Little Brushy General Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Amick-Burnett Funeral Home in Chaffee.
