Richard John “Rich” Filer, 77, of Festus died July 7, 2024. Mr. Filer graduated from Valle High School in 1964. He worked his way from stock boy, to partner, to owner of the Stoplight Fruit Market in Crystal City. Later in life, he sold cars with his friend, Greg Lewis. He was a horseman, entrepreneur, businessman, published author and a leader in his church and community. He enjoyed reading, golfing with Jackie, storytelling and spending time with family and friends. Born Nov. 26, 1946, he was the son of the late Edith (Papin) and Medford Filer.

He was preceded in death by his first wife: Vina Palmer whom he married in 1967.

He is survived by his second wife: Jacquelyn “Jackie” Klaus Moran whom he married in 1999; two children: Carey (Jill Vaughn) Richard and Jill Christine (Ron Elder); five grandchildren: Christopher Filer, Collin Filer, Ethan Elder, Eli Elder and Hayden Elder; a stepdaughter: Emily Moran (Barrett Conrad); and a step-granddaughter: Beatrix Conrad; four siblings: Steve (Sharon), Greg (Chris Winters), Mark (Sandy) and Mary Beth (Pat Werner); and a sister-in-law: Angie.

He also was preceded in death by three siblings: David Filer, Gwen Walsh and Michael Filer.

A memorial gathering is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. until a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Our Lady Church, 1550 St. Mary’s Lane, in Festus, officiated by Father John Schneider. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Crystal City. Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Lancer Endowment Fund or Masses. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus.
