Melinda Inez Hempstead, 62, of Festus died Aug. 14, 2025, at her home. Ms. Hempstead earned her master's degree in psychology and devoted herself to understanding the ways that humor and philosophy could offer hope and healing. She enjoyed making others laugh through her career as a clown and juggler, and through her hobbies of dance and origami. She also worked for a time in the mental health field. She will be remembered for her loving and generous personality and her daily positive affirmations that she shared with family members. Born March 8, 1963, in Oconomowoc, Wis., she was the daughter of Marilyn (Zahl) and John Hempstead of La Crosse, Wis.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her son: Edward “Ed” Rico of New Bedford, Mass.; a grandson: Soren Rico; and a sister: Laura (Stanley) Smith of Festus.
Services will be private. Memorials may be made to the Mental Health Awareness Foundation. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
