Margaret Helen Atzert, 78, of Arnold died Dec. 28, 2023. Mrs. Atzert was a 1963 graduate of Notre Dame High School, where she made numerous lifelong friendships. She worked various positions after raising her children, including house cleaning, American General Insurance, and secretary at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Imperial. She is remembered as a woman who knew no stranger and whose love extended to her children’s friends and families, her fellow members of Immaculate Conception Church and the surrounding community. She loved dancing with her husband, laughing at jokes she didn’t understand, volunteering at PSR and various church or school events, singing off-key, embracing others and praying for those in need. Born Feb. 8, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Laurine (Roth) and John Mayer.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Kenneth (Ken) Atzert, whom she married May 6, 1967.
She is survived by seven children: Debbie (Mark) Schanda, Ed (Michelle) Atzert, Suesy (Eric) Seel, Laurie (Don) Lewis, Mindy (Kevin) Thomas, Johnny (Leah) Atzert and Mike (Amy) Atzert; 21 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-8 pm. Thursday, Jan. 4, at Hoffmeister South County Chapel, 1515 Lemay Ferry Road, in south St. Louis County. Funeral gathering is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral Mass at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2300 Church Road, in Arnold. Burial will follow in the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to any local charity, courtesy of Laurie Lewis. Arrangements are under the direction of Hoffmeister Funeral Home.
