Judith “Judy” Hayes, 90, of Festus died Feb. 6, 2025, at her home. Mrs. Hayes was a 1952 graduate of Festus High School. Shortly after graduating, she met her husband. She was a Christian. She enjoyed painting and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren who knew her as “Mammy.” She was known for her grace, kindness and generous spirit. Born April 13, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Ruby Mertell.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years: William “Bill” Hayes.
She is survived by three children: Julie (Rick) Portell, Richard (Shelley) Hayes and Brenda (Kelley) Young; 12 grandchildren: Josh (Melanie) Portell, Cortney (Kevin) Harris, Colby (Bridgett) Portell, Stephanie (Chris) Sanders, Ashley (Mario) Garcia, Chelsea (Matt) Leitterman-Higgins, Adam (Chad) Young, Callie (Ryan) Picarella, Tyler Young, Abby Young, Abigail (Brad) Henderson and Donovan Hayes; 16 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandson.
She also was preceded in death by a brother: Richard “Dickie” Mertell.
Visitation is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus. Burial will follow in Presbyterian-Methodist Cemetery in Festus. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
