Ellen A. Akins, 62, of De Soto died Oct. 30, 2024, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mrs. Akins retired from Vineland Elementary School in De Soto in 2014, after a 30-year teaching career. She had also taught at the Athena and Sunrise Schools. Born June 3, 1962, in Crystal City, she was the daughter of the late Ellen M. (Haverstick) and James E. Acord.
She is survived by her husband: Mark Akins of De Soto; two children: James (Stephanie) Akins of De Soto and Jordan (Tamara) Akins of St. Charles; two grandchildren: Adilynn Grace, Kason and one to be born; and two sisters: Michele (Tim) Ahlers of Festus and Marleisa (Gabe) Amsden of Festus.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at First Baptist Church, 2000 Grace Way, in De Soto, officiated by the Rev. Dr. R. Brad Delaughter. A celebration of life will follow the memorial service also at the church . Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 400 Boyd St. De Soto, 63020. Arrangements are under the direction of Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home in De Soto.
