Edward Michael “Mike” Chmela, 80, of Festus died Jan. 30, 2026, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mr. Chmela was a Navy submariner veteran of the Vietnam Era and a retired electrician for the Army Corps of Engineers. He also was a lifelong member of the Festus community. He was known for his constant smile, his kind heart and for being there for others. He enjoyed long walks and looked forward to his Tuesday lunches with friends. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his daughters, grandchildren and great-granddaughters. He will be remembered for his kindness, wry sense of humor, generosity and quiet strength. Born Jan. 10, 1946, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Patricia Ruth (Gerber) and Edward Victor Chmela.
He is survived by two daughters: Kelly (Brad) Gregg of Lake St. Louis and Tammy Chmela of Festus; a sister: Robin Elisabeth (Kevin) Gregory of Barnhart; five grandchildren: Carlito, Quana, Krystal, Jadyn and Dawson; three great-granddaughters: Mila, Eliana and Jaycee; and numerous other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister: Mary “Christine” White.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus.
