Mildred F. Oakes, 104, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of De Soto, died Jan. 11, 2019, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Oakes and her husband owned and operated the Oakes Dime Store in De Soto. Born May 8, 1914, in St. Louis, she was the daughter of the late Mary (Raugh) and Henry Link. She was preceded in death by her husband: Marvin Melton Oakes.
She is survived by two sons: Walter Jerry Oakes of Birmingham, Ala., and David Lee Oakes of College Station, Texas; and five grandchildren: Kathleen, Matthew, Peter, Paula and Benjamin.
She was preceded in death by a brother: Oliver Link; and one grandson: Brian.
Visitation is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home, 220 N. Main St., in De Soto. Burial is in the Woodlawn Cemetery in De Soto. Arrangements are under the direction of Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home.
