Payne, Maxine

Maxine Louis (Jones) Payne, 82, of Perryville, formerly of De Soto, died April 25, 2021 at Southeast Health Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Ms. Payne was a homemaker and a member of Primrose Baptist Church in Bonne Terre. Born April, 27, 1938, in Doniphan, she was the daughter of the late James “Fielding” Jones and Rosa Gladys (Hatfield) Jones; after their deaths, she was raised by her grandmother: Myrtle May (Curl) Hatfield. She was preceded in death by her husband: Elice “Austin” Payne, whom she married on July 20, 1953, and who died in June 2000.

She is survived by eight children: Brenda (Dean) Hendrix of Perryville, Vernon (Nancy Ackman) Payne of Perryville, Sandra Hearn of Arnold, Patricia (Joseph) Smith of De Soto, Pamela (Randall) Chilton of Pevely, Harold “Wayne” Payne of Hillsboro, Kevin Payne Sr. of Hillsboro and Dana (Roger) Barrentine of Hillsboro; 12 grandchildren: Melissa (Brian) Riggs, Shawn Sanderson, Aaron (Jaclyn Penfield) Payne, Andrena (Amos Petrie) Olsen, Kevin “PJ” Payne Jr., Brittney Richards, Candice (Eric Reupke) Smith, Rachael (Jeffery Davis) Chilton, Ashlynn (Kyle Ostrowski) Payne, Samantha Barrentine, Landry Barrentine and Bobby Barrentine; 10 great-grandchildren: Ashleigh Chester, Jeffrey “AJ” Bibb, Kobe Petrie, Rickey McKee, Ethan Olsen, Dannalei Petrie, Kaden Olsen, Everett May, Asher Petrie and Jasper Davis; a sister: Rosa Violet (Jones) Steen of Ferguson; and a sister-in-law: Carol Sue (McGinnis) Jones of Bellefontaine, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by a son: James Darryl Payne; a grandson: Gabriel Smith; two brothers: James Edward (Geraldine) Jones and Junior Leroy Jones; a sister: Myrtle Ann (Leonard Eugene) Brown; a brother-in-law: Howard “Junior” Steen; and three other grandparents: Cyrus Hatfield, James W. Jones and Mary Ann (Hoover) Jones-Georger.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home, 220 N. Main, in De Soto, officiated by Pastor Randy Murphy. Burial is in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Doniphan. Memorials may be made to Primrose Baptist Church, c/o Randy or Marilyn Murphy, 9140 Hwy E.
