Martha Augusta “Marty” (Grither) Abernathy, 94, of Festus, died Nov. 15, 2016, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. She was a former member of Radiant Church in Festus and volunteered with several organizations, including the auxiliary at Mercy Hospital Jefferson. She loved spending time with family.
Born Nov. 15, 1922, she was the daughter of the late William and Augusta (Roth) Grither of St. Mary. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years: William Abernathy.
She is survived by three sons: Randall (Debbie) Abernathy of St. Louis, Darrell (Joanne) Abernathy of Clayton and Troy Abernathy of Festus; one daughter: Brenda (Michael) Costello of Arnold; seven grandchildren: Matthew (Alex MacClennan) Costello, Rebecca (Quenton) Costello Champ, Arika (Billy) Abernathy White, Ellory Abernathy, Brittany Abernathy, Zachary (Leanne) Abernathy and Charlie Abernathy; one great-grandson: Lincoln Champ; one sister-in-law: Patsy Grither; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by seven siblings: Regina Winkler, Walter Grither, Charles Grither, Cletus Grither, Veronica Grither, Catherine Stackle and Wilford Grither.
