Vollmar, Lewis

Lewis C. Vollmar, 94, of Bloomsdale died Jan. 3, 2019. Mr. Vollmar received his engineering degree from Washington University in 1946, and he and his brother founded the Vollmar Brothers Construction Co. in St. Louis, which specialized in industrial, commercial, and river construction projects, including Six Flags Over Mid-America. Mr. Vollmar served as the company’s vice-president and treasurer. In 1945 he earned an aircraft pilot license and in 1951 he acquired a radio amateur license and was actively on the air as W0GPF. In 1967 he constructed in his basement his first airplane, a sailplane, which he and his children flew regularly. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Engineers Club of St. Louis, Missouri Athletic Club, Washington University Club, Propeller Club and the Ste. Genevieve Missouri Society for Preservation. He was born in 1922 in St. Louis, the son of the late Joseph E. and Rhea V. (Lewis) Vollmar.He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years: Olive Cecil (Sears) Vollmar.

He is survived by three children: Linda Anne, Lewis C. Jr., and Victoria Marie; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Joseph; and a son: Scott.

Visitation is at 1 p.m. and a memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Mahn Twin City Chapel, 515 Collins Dr., in Festus. Memorials may be made to Serenity Hospice Care or any animal shelter. Arrangements are under the direction of Mahn Twin City Chapel.
