Kathryn Ann “Katie” Steger Walterscheid, 83, of Imperial died March 26, 2018. Born in January 1935 in St. Louis, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Julia (Fiscko) Steger. She was raised in south Saint Louis, sleeping on beer crates above the family tavern on Michigan Avenue, where patrons knew her as “Peanut.” She attended both Saint Anthony’s and Saint Cecilia’s Catholic grade schools and graduated from Cleveland High School.
Mrs. Walterscheid got her first job at age 13 at a local dime store, and later worked at the Granada movie theatre, did some modeling, managed an orthodontic office, helped run a trucking company with her husband, Jerry, and was a contract administrator for an aeronautics industry supplier. She was an active member of St Joseph’s parish in Imperial, where, as the school’s volunteer librarian she was known as the “Library Lady.” She loved the color pink and loved to plan parties. She is most remembered for her joyful and loving heart and her optimistic attitude, and her faith and intense will to live.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome “Jerry” Walterscheid, whom she married in 1956 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Kimmswick, who died in 2000, as well as her grandson, Sammy Walterscheid Chunn.
She is survived by three daughters: Kimberly Walterscheid (Augusto Calderoni), Melaney Walterscheid (Ron Chunn) and Kathryn Walterscheid (Steven Hause); two grandchildren: Maria Calderoni and Luca Calderoni; two sisters: Dolores Mabery and Joan Kennedy; lifelong friend Carol Breitweiser, whom she met when both were newborns in the hospital nursery; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Imperial April 14, 2018, with visitation at 9 a.m. and a funeral Mass scheduled for 10:30 a.m., followed by a luncheon in the school cafeteria provided by the ladies of the parish. Feel free to wear pink in Katie’s honor.
