John Joseph Cords, 76, of Pevely died July 31, 2017, at his home. Mr. Cords was a retired mail carrier with the Pevely Post Office and a member of the former Assumption Catholic Church in Herculaneum. He was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of American Legion Post 253 and Amvets 42. Born Jan. 8, 1941, in Horine he was the son of the late Theresa Genevieve (Coleman) and Henry E. Cords Sr.
He is survived by two daughters: Gloria (David) Miller of Granite City, Ill., and Cathy (Allan) Nakamura of Louisville, Ky.; a son: Mike (Tammy) Cords of Crystal City; a son-in-law: Richard Monroe of St. Louis; two brothers: Henry E. (the late Janice) Cords Jr. of Pevely and Paul L. (Dorothy) Cords of Imperial; a brother-in-law: Carl Willenbrock; 11 grandchildren: Elizabeth Brown, Deanna Cords, Michael Cords Jr., Tiffiny Henderson, Jessica Dejarnette, William Meeks, Melissa Monroe, Katie Monroe, Nikki Monroe, Mindy Bailey and Brad Nakamura; and numerous great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter: Kristy Monroe; a sister: Mary Nell Willenbrock; and a brother: Alvin Cords.
Visitation is at 10 a.m. and a funeral service is scheduled for noon Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Vinyard Hillcrest Funeral Home, 9115 Commercial Blvd., in Pevely. Burial is in Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Crystal City. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
