John Franklin Maness, 71, of De Soto died May 5, 2020, at his home. Mr. Maness was a retired supervisor for the De Soto Street Department. He was retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service and was a life member of Amvets Post 48 and VFW Post 1831. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and shooting matches and was often known by his C.B. handle of “Chicken Thief.” Born Nov. 10, 1948, in De Soto; he was the son of the late Fannie B. (Taylor) and Edwin Maness.
He is survived by his companion of 38 years: Sandra Paul of De Soto; a stepdaughter: Stephanie (John) Kitchell of De Soto; a stepson: Larry Paul of Bonne Terre; two siblings: Joyce Robertson of Greers Ferry, Ark., and Ron (Sue) Maness of De Soto; a granddaughter: Amber Harris, and her mother, Lorrie Payne; two grandsons: Matthew (Beth) Kitchell and Andrew Kitchell; and two great-grandchildren: Haylie Harris and Hudson Kitchell.
A private graveside service was held at Woodlawn Cemetery in De Soto. Arrangements were under the direction of Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home in De Soto.
