James Lee “Jim” Watson, 71, of Hillsboro died Jan. 22, 2021. Mr. Watson grew up in Champaign, Ill., and attended Central High School, where he was on the wrestling team. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history and economics from the University of Illinois, where he was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity and earned a letter in wrestling. He later earned a master’s degree in economics and journalism at the University of Missouri in Columbia. He taught economics at Jefferson College in Hillsboro for 35 years. He was a member of the Geezers, a group of fellow academics who discussed academics, business and politics of the day. He was a sports fan, especially Boston Celtics and Utah Jazz basketball, Chicago Cubs baseball, University of Illinois football and basketball. He loved music and learned to play guitar with his brother, Bob. He was an avid Star Trek fan, loved to cook chili and had a penchant for chocolate. He was widely respected for his quick wit, charismas and general interest in others, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife: Polly Watson; a son: Thomas (Kaysie); a daughter: Katie; two brothers: Jack Watson of Naperville, Ill., and Bob Watson of Champaign, Ill.; two grandchildren: Ava and Isabella; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial celebration will be held when it is safe to gather. Memorials may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation or to Jefferson College. Arrangements were under the direction of Mahn Funeral Home in De Soto.
