Westrich, Herman

Herman A. Westrich, 90, of Arnold died March 1, 2019, in St. Louis. Mr. Westrich was born Aug. 26, 1928, in New Hamburg. He was a cartographer with the Defense Mapping Agency in St. Louis. He was a 50-year member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Arnold, where he was a member of the Men’s Club and an avid fundraiser for the annual golf tournament. He also was active with the Eagles Club in Arnold, volunteering at its weekly bingos for more than 15 years. He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of staff sergeant and serving as a forward observer in the infantry. He earned a number of awards, including a Bronze Star for meritorious service in combat. He was active with the Korean War Veterans Association on the local, regional and national level, participating at meetings, speaking at schools and attending reunions all over the country. He enjoyed woodworking and made hundreds of items for his family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years: Thelma (Jensrud) Westrich.

Mr. Westrich is survived by four children: Brian (Mary Ann) Westrich of Arnold, Cindy Schwartz of Fenton, Curt (Lisa) Westrich of St. Peters and Terry Westrich of High Ridge; a brother: Edward (Kathleen) Westrich of New Hamburg; seven grandchildren: Bobbi of Arrington, Tenn., Tiffany of Fenton, Beth of Arnold, Katelyn of Dardenne Prairie, Chris of St. Louis, Rebekah of St. Peters and Brandon of Arnold; and three great-grandchildren: Maveric and Maxden of Arrington, Tenn., and Adrian of Arnold.

Funeral Mass was held March 8 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Arnold. Burial with full military honors was in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Korean War Veterans Association or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
