Caputo, Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn Maria “Gwen” Caputo, 70, of Festus died Oct. 25, 2019, at her home. Mrs. Caputo, a member of Our Lady Church in Festus, retired after 25 years as an office systems technology professor at Jefferson College in Hillsboro. She was extraordinarily generous, donating to many charities, and maintained numerous groups of friends, spanning from grade school to adulthood. She enjoyed cooking, family gatherings, walking, and being outdoors, especially hunting morel mushrooms. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and pets. Born Dec. 19, 1948, in St. Louis, she was the daughter of the late Edith (Papin) and Medford Filer.

She is survived by her husband: Mark Caputo; a daughter: Dr. Sarah (Joe Sonderman) Walsh of St. Louis; a son: Dr. Scott (Kim) Joggerst of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren: Carter, Reed and Greta Sonderman and Coen and Eva Joggerst; five brothers: Michael (Angie) Filer of Bonne Terre, Richard “Rich” (Jackie Moran) Filer of Festus, Steve (Sharon) Filer of Festus, Greg Filer (Chris) of Festus and Mark (Sandy) Filer of Eureka; and a sister: Mary Beth (Patrick) Werner of Festus.

She was preceded in death by her first husband: Dr. Raymond Walsh; and an infant brother: David Filer.

Visitation is scheduled from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Our Lady Church in Festus. Burial  is in the St. Anne Cemetery in French Village. Memorials may be made to the Food Pantry at First United Methodist Church of Festus/Crystal City, to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation, or to the Holy Spirit Adoration (Pink) Sisters. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
