Garber, George

George W. Garber, 96, of Bloomsdale died Dec. 17, 2016, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mr. Garber was retired after 39 years as a glassworker with Pittsburgh Plate Glass’ Crystal City plant and was a longtime member and usher of Sacred Heart Church in Crystal City. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was a member of VFW Post 3777 and American Legion Post 253. Born Feb. 22, 1920 in Early, Iowa, he was the son of the late Sarah (Baker) and Christopher Garber. He was preceded in death by his wife: Eugenia Rose (Burgee) Garber.

He is survived by three daughters: Carla (Preston) Williams of Bloomsdale, Marl (Paul) Drury of Bloomsdale and Lori (Bobby) Branch of Festus; three sons: Vance (Linda) Garber of Bloomsdale, Hal (Angie) Garber of Bloomsdale and Barry (Cheri) Garber of Bloomsdale; a sister: Laverne (the late Ken) Carbo of Colorado Springs, Colo.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and his companion: Imogene Bunch of Bloomsdale.

He was preceded in death by a son: Jan Christopher Garber; two brothers; and four sisters.

Visitation is scheduled from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main, in Festus. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at Sacred Heart Church in Crystal City, officiated by Father Clark Maes. Burial is in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Crystal City.  Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
